aUnlike the Violence Against Women group, this does not formally declare that it is open to women only, but it is evident that in practice it is only intended for them. An article on it in Network for March 1997: says that âthese meetings provide a forum for lesbians in academia (staff and students, past and present) to not only meet each other and discuss our work but also to share the trials and tribulations of (being a lesbian in) academic life!â
One of the earliest initiatives was for Caucus members to agree to raise the need to have more papers relevant to sexual divisions in BSA study groups they attended (WCN, 1975: 4). In 1981, data were collected on the content of sociological theory courses, intended to provide a basis for a workshop at the 1982 annual conference, whose theme was âGender and Societyâ.17 This reflected the feeling that (male) theorists were giving insufficient attention to feminist theory, or to the need to revise âgeneralâ theory to take women into account. Also in 1982, the Theory study group held a conference on âGender and Social Theoryâ, but this gave rise to considerable dissatisfaction and controversy â see below. It was probably in response to that that in 1983 the BSA allocated money for a women-only conference on the relationship between feminism and sociological theory, but this does not appear ever to have taken place; it vanishes from the paper record. In 1986, however, the Theory study group held a conference on âFeminist Theoryâ, organised â because of this and of the dissatisfaction with the predominance in the group of male participants and speakers â by Sue Clegg of the Caucus (WCN, 1986: 22). This attracted a much larger than usual attendance, of 100 women and 26 men. That was followed in 1988 by another Theory group conference on gender issues, this time on âMen, Masculinity and Social Theoryâ; this also attracted a large audience, though with a different sex ratio â 45 women and 56 men (WCN, March 1983: 10). It would be interesting to know the extent of the overlap between the audiences at these conferences and others held by the Theory group, but data on that are not available, so it is not clear how far the usual attenders had been persuaded to extend the range of topics in which they were interested.
In 1988, the possibility of a second BSA journal was under discussion, and a gender focus was mooted. The Womenâs Caucus response to this was somewhat ambivalent, because âwhile there is a clear need for more journal space to be devoted to the work of feminist sociologists, a journal in the area of gender studies might inadvertently serve to marginalise this work still furtherâ (Annual Report 1989). If, however, the discussion continued, it felt that the Caucus should be involved. For 1990, the 1991 Annual Report shows that
